Study on Vilhelm Hammershøi

The amount of color in this particular painting may not be immediately obvious, but as I was studying the original and painting my rendition, the colors slowly manifested themselves.   There is a certain value of light in the original oil painting which is very difficult to achieve in the watercolor medium. (I’ll have to get my oil paints out again).

The original painting is Søndermarken Park in Winter by Vilhelm Hammershøi.

  2. Beautiful colours! I love how the stark brown-black branches and white snow somehow blend with diffuse browns with hints of red, blue and gold. Interesting piece. I looked up the original and I find your watercolour takes an interesting little detour.
