Watercolor Sketch

This painting became more of a color and light study rather than a portrayal of columns in a cathedral.  There was too much detail to cover on a small piece of paper, and I didn’t want the piece to look over-worked, so I focused on shadows and the colors we find in them.

The columns are loosely adapted from those in Chester Cathedral, though the ratios are dramatically changed.

  1. I think your choice of not delving into the details worked really well. I really like the atmosphere, soft and rhythmical colors of the columns and shadows, with repetition as well as change, complete with the striking blue outlook and the column in the foreground.

  2. That’s neat, I never thought about color in shadows
