Working On Color

When it comes to color, I’m positively dreadful.  I just can’t seem to perceive it.  Just look at previous paintings, and you’ll find them dull and morbid in color.  Our color blind scanner can’t pick up weak colors (as evidenced in the painting below.  The sky is really a light shade of blue) and most of my paintings become scanned looking black and white (except for bright shades of red. Those create a selective color effect, which, though aesthetically pleasing, is not the intended effect.)  So, today I went crazy with the color.  The scanner still failed to pick up some of the shades, but you get the gist of it.

The painting is based off of one of Beatrix Potter’s, but as I had to work on getting color right, I didn’t think originality was important.

  2. I like the colors you use – they’re neutrals – natural. But if you don’t like it, then maybe you’re mixing up your colors too well? I know if you keep mixing, they tend to turn to mud. Especially if you mix in your tray instead of letting them mix on paper (which is less mixing because you’re just dropping color). I’m no expert in watercolor – I’m new so I’m just going by what I’ve noticed myself. Also, don’t scan – get a digital camera. I think you do beautiful work. 🙂

    1. That’s probably what I’m doing. I guess we learn from our mistakes 🙂 I did end up (for the first time) mixing the colors on the paper for this piece. But of course the scanner failed to pick out colors, so yes, I’ll have to find a good camera in place of the scanner. Thanks for all the advice! Glad we can benefit from each other on WP.

  3. Ha, I’m just the opposite – whatever I do the colours end up glaringly bright. Sometimes this is good but it’s nit always intentional. Scanners seem pretty rubbish at picking up cerulean blue and any bright yellow.

    1. Well I suppose we all have our own color personalities 🙂 I have to do something about that scanner.

  4. Well, I don’t know much about the technical stuff of art. But I see such magnificent paintings, I can’t resist myself from hitting like. Simply awesome!

  5. Hello Harrison. Your paintings are beautiful. 🙂
About the color scanner not picking up the shades correctly, here are few things that may be you can try when it comes to paint and paper. I do oil on canvas though, not watercolors but I think medium doesn’t matter much. Using your board/paper as your palette works wonders. That is how I paint – Blobs of paint on palette, and all the mixing happens on the canvas. And keep it dirty – That is what my art teacher taught me. Dont mix it blend in too much of paint. 3D effect is more when you do the work ‘not too nice (blending)’. And this one is something that you might already know, if you want something to look dark, make the surrounding a shade lighter.
And if still things don’t work out, you can scan from your cellphone and upload the photos. ☺

    1. Thanks for the tips, Rheka! I’ll be sure to try them, being self taught I still have a lot to learn 🙂 I’ll also try taking photos too.

      1. Wow, self taught! I am no artist, I just wanted to learn something so I joined a oil painting course. Painting is so much fun, isn’t it. 🙂
